School accountability ratings can have a significant impact on home prices in our community, therefore is important for our families to understand that a school may receive a lower rating because economically disadvantaged students were not considered properly
in test results which could affect the entire neighborhood.

As you can see, the benefits of free and reduced qualification do not only apply to receiving school meals free or at a reduced rate, but provide many other discounts and benefits to our families and to the
District overall.

It is important that every family is aware of these benefits and encourage other families to apply for the benefits that they may be eligible to receive.

Impact on CFBISD

  1. The District receives 20% more funding per student that qualifies for free and reduced status. Increasing our percentage can add millions in state revenue to the District.
  2. The District can take advantage of more grant opportunities based on these counts.
  3. The District’s ratings for accountability, fiscal effectiveness and other measures are impacted by our percentage of free and reduced students.
  4. The District realizes higher reimbursement rates for federal technology subsidies.
  5. General fund money used in the past to cover cafeteria balances can be used elsewhere.

1. Who Can Get Free or Reduced-Price Meals? ¿Quién puede recibir comida gratuita?

o Income- Children can get free or reduced-price meals if a household’s gross income (total, without deductions) is within the limits described in the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.
o Special Assistance Program Participants- Children in households receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Food Distribution Program for Households on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are eligible for free meals.
o Foster- Foster children who are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals.
o Head Start, Early Head Start, and Even Start- Children participating in these programs are eligible for free meals.
o Homeless, Runaway, and Migrant- Children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant qualify for free meals. If you haven’t been told about a child’s status as homeless, runaway, or migrant or you feel a child may qualify for one of these programs, please call Student Services at 972.968.6506 to see if your child qualifies.
o WIC Recipient- Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals on an income basis. Please complete an application to determine if your household qualifies.

3. My Child’s Application Was Approved Last Year. Do I Need To Fill Out A New Application? La solicitud de mi hijo fue aprobada el año pasado. ¿Necesito llenar otra solicitud?

Yes. An application is only good for that school year and for the first few days of this school year. Complete a new application for the upcoming school year unless the Student Nutrition office sent you a letter stating that your child is directly certified for free or reduced-price meals for the new school year.

4. What If My Income Is Not Always The Same? ¿Qué pasa si mi ingreso no es igual siempre?

List the amount normally received. If a household member had to miss work last month, list usual pay. If a household member normally gets overtime pay, include that amount as income. If a household member lost a job or had hours/wages reduced, use current income.

Yes. Apply at any time during the school year. A child with a parent/guardian who becomes unemployed at any time during the school year may become eligible for free or reduced-price meals if the household income drops below the income limit.

Basic pay and cash bonuses must be reported as income. Any cash value allowances for off-base housing, food, or clothing, or Family Subsistence Supplemental allowance payments count as income. If housing is part of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative, do not include your housing allowance as income. Any additional combat pay resulting from deployment is excluded from income.
